Red Sand Beach, Hana, Maui

Whether it's finding a photogenic local, animal, or someone traveling with you, what can elevate a generic postcard-perfect photo is adding a person for context or scale. Sometimes a place is very grand and majestic, but it's not translating in a picture. If you add a person to the image you can, all of a sudden, get a better sense of the scale of the place. My friend/assistant/model and I woke up early at Travaasa in Hana and drove a few minutes down the road to hike to Red Sand Beach. The trail there is very vertical and a bit harrowing but offers great views down onto the beach. Because most of the tourists drive into Hana for the day we were able to be one of the first ones at the beach that day. She went ahead of me and sat in the curve of the beach which added scale to the photo. The polarizer helped cut the glare of the water and sand while making the colors richer. I also shot this on digital but prefer the colors and texture of the film shot so was worth lugging the extra camera in the end!

Let’s talk lens compression…

The idea behind lens compression is utilizing a telephoto lens

I have finally made my perfect week in Iceland guide! I first visited Iceland in 2016 and then returned last year and am ready to go back again. It's a magical place full of hot springs, waterfalls, rainbows, horses, glaciers, and painted hills. Many
